CHAPTER 1

LUCUS POV

As I cruised down the highway, the airport's imposing structure looming in the distance, my mind was a thousand miles away. The hum of the engine and the gentle rustle of the trees whipping past couldn't shake the storm playing in my head - my mother's words were echoing in my head.

"Please Lucus for me , for the last time Lucus. Meet her for once and even you are going to India what's the problem with meeting her for once."

I was going to India to attend a meeting, as my mom told me to meet a girl for my marriage. I really don't want to get married but she's trying to get me married. I was far from ready. Why couldn't she understand ?

The familiar hum of the airport enveloped me as I stepped out of the car, but my mind was still stuck in the past, replaying the conversation I'd had with Mom the night before. Her words, laced with a mix of love and subtle pressure, lingered in my ears: "Beta, I've found a wonderful girl, and I want you to meet her. She's everything you've ever wanted, I promise." I'd tried to reason with her, to explain that I wasn't ready, that I had other priorities, but she'd just laughed it off, her eyes sparkling with a knowing glime. "You're 27, it's time to settle down, dear. Trust me, this is what's best for you." Ugh, that tone – it was like she knew me, and yet, didn't know me at all. As I walked into the airport, the chaos and bustle around me seemed to fade into the background, and I felt like I was walking into a war zone, not a simple meeting. Mom had made it clear: this was happening, whether I liked it or not.

"But I am also her son , this meeting with her is not going to take place." I smirked shouldering my bag , moving ahead. The plane touched down smoothly, and I let out a quiet breath. As I disembarked, the warm, humid air enveloped me, a familiar yet always surprising sensation. I collected my luggage and walked out of the airport, the bright sunlight making me squint. Rohan came to pick me up from the airport who was a driver sent by the company.

The drive to the city was a blur of neon signs, dusty streets, and the incessant honking that seemed to be the soundtrack of Mumbai. I sat at the back seat of the car. The journey was long from the airport to Mumbai but we reached on time without any traffic or mess.

I stepped out of the car, and as my feet hit the pavement, I felt a weird squelch beneath my shoe. I looked down, and my face contorted in disgust - my pristine white sneaker was now adorned with a generous dollop of something brown and sticky. The driver, Rohan, caught my expression and sheepishly offered, "Ah, sir, I think that's... uh... cow dung."

I raised an eyebrow, my sarcasm meter on high alert. "A great day with a great start," I muttered, shaking my head. "Just what I needed - a warm welcome to Mumbai."

Rohan chuckled, trying to lighten the mood, "Well, sir, it's a... unique way to start the day, no?"

I shot him a wry look, "Unique? That's one word for it." I took a deep breath, mentally adding "shoe cleaning" to my to-do list. "Guess this is a sign I need to be more grounded, literally."

With a smirk, I carefully made my way to the hotel entrance, trying not to slip on any more "gifts" from the street. The sticky, pungent mess on my shoe seemed to be a harbinger of things to come - a not-so-subtle reminder that this trip was going to be a real treat.

I walked into the company's sleek, modern reception area, and Mr. Shah, the CEO, greeted me with a warm smile. "Ah, welcome, welcome! How was the trip, sir?" he asked, his eyes cr crling at the corners.

I returned his smile, dryly, "A good start, Mr. Shah. Though I think I got a little extra baggage with me," I said, gesturing to my shoe, still adorned with the offending cow dung.

Mr. Shah's eyes followed my gesture, and he burst out laughing. "Ah, I see!" We walked into the conference room, and I was immediately struck by the energy in the air. The team was already seated, their eyes fixed on me with a mix of curiosity and anticipation. I gestured to Mr shah to take the lead, and he launched into the presentation, feeling confident and prepared.

The meeting was a whirlwind of ideas, questions, and challenges, but I was impressed by the team's engagement and insight. They were sharp, thoughtful, and passionate about their work.

As we dug deeper into the discussion, I was struck by the company's innovative approach to solving complex problems. They were thinking outside the box, pushing boundaries, and exploring new frontiers. I was impressed, and my initial skepticism began to fade.

The meeting wrapped up with a sense of momentum, and I was buzzing with ideas and possibilities.

We exchanged a few more words, and then Mr. Shah glanced at his watch. "Ah, I think it's time for a break. Why don't you take a few minutes to freshen up, and then we'll... attend to the other matter."

I knew exactly what he was referring to, and my stomach did a little flip. The "other matter" being my meeting with the mystery girl Mom had set me up with. I took a deep breath, mentally preparing myself. Bring it on, I thought. My phone buzzed in my hand, and I smiled, knowing exactly who it was. "Hola mamá," I said, answering the call.

"¡Hola mi amor! ¿Cómo estuvo la reunión?" Mom's voice was bright and cheerful.

"Hmm, it was fine, mamá," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

"That's great, beta! I'm so glad it went well," Mom said, her tone warm and encouraging. "Now, about meeting the girl... please, just give her a chance, okay? She's really looking forward to meeting you."

I sighed inwardly, knowing I couldn't say no to Mom. "Okay, mamá... I'll meet her."

Mom's voice was triumphant, but still sweet. "¡Gracias, mi amor! I knew you'd understand. She's a lovely girl, I promise. And I'll make sure it's a nice, quiet meeting, just the two of you."

I smiled, feeling a pang of affection. "Alright, mamá. Text me the details, and I'll be there."

Mom's voice was full of happiness. "Te quiero, Lucas! (Thank you, lucus)."

I chuckled, feeling a little trapped, but happy to please Mom. "Yo también te quiero, mamá. Bye." I exhaled hanging up the phone , She does what she wants , just like me. As my phone was again buzzed , now with a notification from my mom about the details and the venue. I slipped my phone in my pocket.
